Summer is almost here and many families are looking forward to enjoying time together on vacation. Whether you’re lounging on a beach, hiking in the mountains, or exploring a new place, be sure to take care of your braces to keep your treatment on track and avoid problems that require emergency care. DeDomenico Orthodontists recommends these tips to keep your teeth and braces in great shape while you’re having fun this summer.
Eat Smart
While enjoying a vacation or summer break, many people overindulge in foods that aren’t the healthiest. Many of these treats are also bad for braces so remember to avoid certain types of foods:
Sticky Foods to Avoid:
- Saltwater Taffy
- Gum
- Toffee
- Caramels
- Dried Fruit
These foods not only stick to your braces but can also damage wires and other parts.
Other Foods to Avoid:
- Whole Nuts
- Raw Apples and Carrots
- Hard-Shell Tacos
- Crusty Breads and Rolls
- Corn on the Cob
- Bagels
- Chips
- Pizza Crust
These foods can also damage braces so steer clear of them no matter how great the temptation. Also, remember not to chew on ice.
Maintain Your Oral Hygiene Routine
When on vacation or summer break it’s easy to let routines fall by the wayside, but don’t let your dental hygiene care be one of them. Caring for your teeth supports your overall health and helps you avoid gum disease, tooth decay and more. Brush and floss at least twice a day to assure that when your braces are removed, your will have a flawless smile to share with the world. Even after an exhausting day, take the time to brush and floss to protect your beautiful teeth.
Create a Braces-Specific Travel Kit
Be prepared in the event that orthodontic issues arise while you are away from home and unable to visit our office for assistance. You can purchase a pre-made braces kit or create one yourself. It should include:
- Travel Toothbrush
- Fluoride Toothpaste
- Mouthwash
- Dental Floss and Floss Threaders
- Orthodontic Wax (to manage discomfort if there are protruding wires)
- Compact Mirror
- Extra Rubber Bands or Elastics (if needed)
- Over-the-counter Painkillers
Pack these items in a separate small case that you can keep handy in case of emergencies.
Use a Mouth Guard When Needed
Wear a mouth guard when engaging in physical activities that could result in a hit to the face and mouth. You want to protect your teeth and braces while participating in activities, from rough-housing to baseball, which could result in a mouth or tooth injury.
